I fell in love with coaching when I hired a coach for myself. As a veteran school counselor, I was feeling overwhelmed with my career and was burnt out by the day-to-day demands of my school setting. I knew it was time for a change, but I was feeling very stuck. Through my sessions with my coach, I was able to get back in touch with myself, my values, and my strengths. Through reflective inquiry, my coach assisted me in re-framing my circumstances and focusing on my desires so I could move towards a plan to change careers. It's not that I haven't had big transitions before, but the difference this time, was that I had a helper to hold space for me as I navigated through the muck and into a space of light and direction.
I wish I had had a coach several years ago when I came out later in life and, ultimately, went through a divorce from a 15 year marriage. When I first started to sift through my feelings, I felt very alone and vulnerable. Even with therapy, I struggled to understand myself and be understood. When I found other women who had come out later in life, I was able to rest a little, knowing that others had and were having similar experiences. Now, knowing what I do of coaching, I believe it would have been immensely helpful to partner with a coach who would give me the space to navigate the vulnerable journey into authenticity as a queer woman.
